The Golden Light of Autumn
There is something about the sunshine in autumn.
At least to me, there is.
I swear the light changes this time of year. It seems to glow in a way it doesn't quite glow in summer. A little warmer. A little softer. A little more golden.
Maybe it's the way the sun sits lower in the sky. Maybe it's the shorter days. Maybe it's the changing leaves reflecting all those warm colours back into the world.
Or maybe it's simply that I notice it more because I love autumn.
Whatever the reason, I find myself stopping to look at it. The morning light coming through the kitchen window. The way it catches the tops of the trees. The golden glow across an old wooden table. Even the most ordinary things seem a little prettier when autumn sunshine finds them.
And perhaps that's one of the reasons I love this season so much.
Autumn makes me want to slow down.
Summer always seems to have somewhere to be. Gardens need tending, days are long, grandchildren are busy, and there is always one more thing to do before the sun goes down.
But autumn feels different.
There is still plenty to do, of course. There are gardens to put to bed, markets to prepare for, and all those little things that seem to multiply when the seasons change.
But there is also that little nudge to stop. To pull a chair closer to the window. To put the kettle on. To wrap up in a favourite sweater and sit for a few minutes before getting on with the day.
I think I've always loved the little rituals of autumn.
A warm cup in my hands. A blanket thrown over the back of a chair. A bowl of something homemade sitting on the counter. A pumpkin or two tucked into an old wooden crate. The first candle lit before supper because it gets dark a little earlier now.
Nothing terribly fancy.
Just little things that make home feel like home.
And maybe that's what I love most about this season. It doesn't ask us to make everything perfect.
It simply seems to invite us to notice.
Notice the light. Notice the leaves. Notice the cooler mornings. Notice that the garden is changing. Notice that the year is turning another corner.
There is beauty in that.
I've been thinking about this lately as I've been working on A Note of Grace and all the things that come with this time of year. So much of what I make is really about those same little moments—the things we put around our homes because they make us smile, or because they remind us of someone, or simply because they make an ordinary Tuesday feel a little more special.
Perhaps that's why autumn feels so much like home to me.
It's warm without being fussy. A little nostalgic. A little imperfect. And, if I'm being honest, just a little bit sassy.
So if you happen to notice that the sunshine seems a little more golden this time of year...
Well.
Maybe it's not just me.
Or maybe it is.
Either way, I'm going to pull up a chair and enjoy it.
The kettle's on.
Come sit a spell.
